One of the first questions we are asked is how long it takes to build a bespoke yacht or ship model. While it may seem like a simple question, the answer is rarely straightforward. Every commission is unique, and the time required depends on many factors, from the complexity of the vessel and the available reference information to the level of detail, finishes and bespoke features requested. This is why no two bespoke commissions ever follow exactly the same timeframe.
Many people are surprised to discover that a professionally commissioned model can involve anywhere from a few hundred hours to well over a thousand hours of research, engineering, manufacturing and finishing. Unlike mass-production manufacturers, we are a bespoke model making studio where every model is designed and built individually to achieve the highest standards of accuracy, craftsmanship and longevity. Our goal is not simply to build a model but to create a masterpiece that will faithfully represent its subject for generations.

Research and Reference Information
Every project begins with research, and this often has one of the greatest influences on the overall timeframe.
Some modern superyachts, commercial ships and offshore platforms are supplied with complete construction drawings and highly accurate 3D CAD models directly from the shipyard. Others may only have incomplete paper plans, outdated drawings or a limited collection of photographs. In some cases, particularly with historic vessels, no original plans survive at all.
Research may involve gathering information from yacht builders, shipyards, naval architects, museums, archives and specialist institutions around the world. For corporate projects, obtaining the necessary documentation can also take time, as drawings often pass through several departments, external companies or non-disclosure agreements before they can be shared.
The quality and completeness of the available information have a direct impact on how quickly and efficiently the engineering process can begin and progress.
Digital Design and Engineering
Modern model making begins long before manufacturing starts.
Every bespoke yacht model, custom ship model or offshore display model is digitally engineered in three dimensions. Every surface, joint, fixing point and assembly method must be designed specifically for the chosen scale. Depending on the complexity of the commission, this development alone can account for up to 40% of the overall project time.
Before a single component can be manufactured, every detail must be carefully planned, tested and refined to ensure the model is both accurate and practical to build.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that modern technology has made professional model making almost automatic. Many people imagine that we simply import a design into a computer and press a button to produce the model.
The reality is very different.
Modern CAD software, CNC machining and high-resolution 3D printing have transformed what is possible, but they have not replaced craftsmanship. Instead, they allow us to achieve levels of precision, consistency and durability that would have been impossible only a few decades ago. Technology makes us more efficient in quality and accuracy. It does not remove the time required to engineer and refine every detail.

Vessel Type, Scale and Complexity
Not every vessel requires the same amount of work.
A merchant ship, bulk carrier or tanker generally has simpler forms than a modern superyacht, cruise ship or offshore platform. While every commission requires careful engineering, vessels with flowing curves, complex superstructures or thousands of individual details naturally require considerably more design and manufacturing time.
Scale also plays an important role, although often in ways that surprise clients. Many people assume that a smaller model is automatically quicker and easier to produce. In reality, smaller scales frequently demand greater precision. Details become finer, tolerances become tighter and manufacturing techniques often need to change because larger methods are no longer suitable. The model maker must slow down and refine every detail with even greater care to achieve the same level of realism.
Large models present different challenges. Hulls may require additional structural reinforcement using materials such as fibreglass to ensure long-term rigidity, while larger surfaces require considerably more preparation, finishing and polishing. Rather than size alone, it is the relationship between scale, complexity and manufacturing methods that influences the overall production time.

Manufacturing and Prototyping
Every commission is manufactured using the techniques and materials most appropriate for that specific project.
For particularly complex yacht models, ship models or offshore models, many components are prototyped several times before final production begins. Delicate structures, intricate fittings, lighting systems and structural elements are carefully tested until we are satisfied with their appearance, strength and long-term durability.
Every prototype allows us to refine the design, improve assembly methods and ensure the finished model meets the standards expected from a bespoke commission.
Many clients also choose bespoke features that add another level of complexity to the project. Removable sections, interior detailing, moving components, ambient lighting and other interactive elements all require additional engineering, testing and manufacturing before they can be incorporated into the finished model.
On highly complex commissions, these bespoke features can increase the overall production time by 20–30%, but they also transform the model into a far more engaging and technically impressive display piece.

Finishing Cannot Be Rushed
The finishing process is one of the most demanding stages of professional model making.
Luxury yacht and superyacht models often combine mirror-gloss, satin, matt and metallic finishes on neighbouring surfaces. Achieving these finishes requires multiple carefully applied paint and clear-coat layers, each of which must fully cure before the next stage can begin.
Only then can every surface, edge and detail be polished by hand.
Some processes simply cannot be accelerated. Paints, primers, clear coats and adhesives all require the appropriate curing time to achieve maximum durability. Attempting to rush these stages risks damaging the finish and compromising the quality of the completed model.
A single mistake during finishing can undo weeks of work, which is why patience remains one of the most valuable tools in professional model making.
Technology has transformed professional model making, but it has not replaced craftsmanship.
Client Collaboration
Building a bespoke model is a collaborative process.
At several important stages we invite our clients to review and approve digital designs, materials, colours and finishes before manufacturing continues.
Many private owners are closely involved throughout the commission and provide feedback within hours. Others naturally have demanding schedules and require more time to review each stage.
Corporate projects are often more complex. Several departments may be involved, while the person coordinating the commission is not always the final decision maker. These approval stages can therefore influence the overall timeframe, but they also ensure the finished model reflects the client’s expectations before production moves forward.
Production Planning
Every bespoke commission is carefully scheduled within our workshop programme.
Where possible, we often begin research and digital development before the main manufacturing stage becomes available. This allows projects to progress efficiently while ensuring sufficient workshop time is dedicated once physical production begins.
When several models of the same vessel are commissioned, the engineering work only needs to be completed once. Manufacturing them simultaneously is considerably more efficient than producing several completely different vessels, reducing the overall production time for each individual model.

Presentation, Delivery and Installation
Completing the model is only part of the project. It must also arrive in exactly the same condition in which it leaves our workshop.
Every commission requires a transport solution appropriate to its size, complexity and destination. Some models require elegant hardwood plinths and museum-quality acrylic covers, while others include bespoke display furniture, integrated lighting or custom display cases designed specifically for the surrounding interior.
Larger commissions may require heavy-duty flight cases or on-site installation. Some offshore platform models and exhibition pieces are transported in multiple sections before being carefully assembled at their final location. Every stage is planned to ensure the model is presented exactly as intended.

Quality Takes Time
There is no standard timeframe for building a bespoke yacht, ship or offshore model because there is no standard bespoke commission.
Every project follows its own journey, influenced by the available information, engineering complexity, chosen scale, manufacturing methods, bespoke features and finishing requirements.
