BP is a British multinational energy company and one of the world’s most influential oil and gas supermajors, recognised for its innovation, engineering excellence, and global reach.
The Quad 204 Project is a multi-billion-pound offshore redevelopment of the Schiehallion and Loyal fields—175 kilometres west of the Shetland Islands in the North Sea—and stands as one of BP’s most complex and ambitious engineering achievements.
BP approached us to create a bespoke, interactive display model for their landmark Quad 204 Project—one of the most complex offshore engineering redevelopments in the North Sea. Two models were commissioned: one for BP’s London headquarters and another for the newly designed lobby in Aberdeen.
The brief called for a sleek, high-precision model that would accurately represent the scale, scope, and key components of the project. Each model needed to feature the FPSO Glen Lyon at sea level, with its intricate network of subsea pipelines, cables, and anchors extending to the seabed. The layout included five fully detailed drill centres, each capable of being individually illuminated via remote control to reflect real-world operational milestones.
Purpose-built for BP’s corporate environments, the models were designed to integrate seamlessly with the style and presentation of the existing display installations in their headquarters lobby. Every element—from the overall composition to the smallest subsea fittings—was engineered to capture both the technical complexity and the visual impact of this multi-billion-pound project.
An initial proposal, including detailed 3D visualisations, was prepared to present the intended outcome of the commission. Central to the model was the FPSO Glen Lyon, the floating production vessel at the heart of the Quad 204 Project. This was 3D printed using high-resolution SLA technology for exceptional accuracy and surface quality, then elevated above the plinth representing the seabed to showcase the subsea network.
The model featured meticulously crafted oil, gas, and water pipelines made from metal, with five drill centres illuminated by remote-controlled LED lighting to mirror operational progress on the real project. All pipework and drill centre components were produced through a combination of laser cutting and hand fabrication, with each part individually post-processed, assembled, and finished by hand.
The completed piece was mounted on a bespoke display plinth designed to match the interior aesthetics of BP’s corporate lobbies. A custom-made acrylic cover provided both protection and crystal-clear visibility for the intricate detailing.
The project was delivered under an exceptionally tight deadline—just weeks before the official opening of BP’s new Aberdeen offices. Despite the schedule, both commissioned models were completed, delivered, and installed in the London and Aberdeen lobbies in time for the launch events.
