HBA Residential reached out to us on behalf of Ardal Loh‑Gronager, founder and CEO of Loh‑Gronager Partners Limited, a London‑based boutique investment partnership.
As part of the design process for Mr Loh‑Gronager’s new residence, HBA Residential – an internationally recognised interior design studio – was engaged to provide bespoke luxury interiors. Given Mr Loh‑Gronager’s previous experience working with our director Kaloyan Kolev, who restored a model for him earlier and earned high praise, HBA Residential asked him to coordinate directly with us once again.
This time, Mr Loh‑Gronager specifically requested a highly quality model of a traditional Junk ship, crafted to his exact specifications, to serve as a bespoke feature piece in his home.
The brief was to design and construct a fully customised scale model of a traditional Chinese Junk, tailored specifically for a dedicated space within the client’s residence. The model was to be placed in a purpose-built illuminated shelf, already integrated into the interior design plans. This required us to carefully calculate the appropriate scale of the model to suit the available volume precisely, ensuring perfect alignment with the architectural setting.
HBA Residential provided detailed spatial layouts and aesthetic guidance, which we used to inform both the dimensions and styling of the model. The project included the application of a specific colour palette, the addition of the vessel’s chosen name, and, importantly, the inclusion of Ardal Loh‑Gronager’s personal monogram, to be incorporated into the design discreetly and elegantly.
With clear parameters and a strong design direction, our focus was on translating these elements into a cohesive and accurate physical piece—both as a maritime representation and as an integrated interior design feature.
It is always a pleasure to collaborate with a client who has a clear vision. In this case, we received well-defined specifications regarding the customisations—including colours, finishes, logos, naming, and the monogram—which gave us a solid creative direction. However, the initial reference material for the specific Junk vessel was extremely limited. No technical drawings or plans were available, so we had to undertake extensive research to ensure structural accuracy.
One of the most demanding stages of the project was the creation of the 3D CAD model, developed solely from photographs and video references. This phase required a high level of interpretation and precision, making it arguably the most complex part of the entire process. Once the digital renders were complete, we shared them with HBA Residential for full review. With their approval, we finalised every visual aspect—from materials and colours to sheen levels, lettering, and the accurate placement of the monogram.
Following confirmation, we proceeded with the manufacturing phase. As part of our commitment to transparency and quality, we provided photo updates after each major milestone, allowing the client to stay closely involved and approve every detail.
Most of the painted structures were 3D printed to ensure sharp precision. The masts and wooden details were crafted from pear wood for a fine, natural finish. To achieve an authentic decking appearance, we laser-engraved real wood veneer. The sails were made from hand-painted cloth in the specified tone, with Ardal Loh-Gronager’s monogram carefully applied to the main sail.
The final model was permanently mounted on a sleek black wooden base, designed to enhance the model’s presence while complementing the bespoke interior in which it would be displayed.
The final result was met with great satisfaction by both Ardal Loh‑Gronager and the team at HBA Residential. The fully customised Junk ship model was delivered and installed in Mr Loh‑Gronager’s residence, fitting seamlessly into the dedicated illuminated shelf designed for it.
The precision of the craftsmanship, the accuracy of the detailing, and the integration of personal elements—such as the custom colour scheme and monogram—were all praised for their quality and execution. The model now stands as a distinctive feature within the interior, serving both as a refined decorative piece and a reflection of the client’s individuality.
This successful collaboration highlights the value of combining custom model making, bespoke design, and close coordination with top-tier interior designers like HBA Residential.
