This commission was entrusted to Polaris Models by Andrew Gidden in honour of his late father, Captain R. M. Gidden. The project carried deep personal significance, celebrating the career and legacy of a distinguished mariner through the creation of a highly detailed, large-scale model of the SS Corinthic.
Our commission was to create a custom-built scale model of the SS Corinthic, built in 1947, at an impressive 1/72 scale. Measuring over two metres in length, the model was mounted on a bespoke wooden base and protected with a precision-fitted glass display cover.
Due to the scarcity of available reference material, extensive research was required before construction could begin. With limited original drawings and photographs, we gathered all available information and created a full set of working plans to ensure accuracy in every detail.
Given the size of the model, hull integrity was paramount. To achieve strength and durability, the final shell plating was formed from fibreglass, providing a flawless surface and ensuring the model’s long-term stability.
The superstructure and most of the finer details were fabricated using a combination of laser cutting and high-precision 3D printing. For authenticity, the decking and select fittings were crafted from pear wood, while the railings were made from chemically photo-etched brass. Additional fine details were produced from brass, steel, or resin, depending on the requirements of each component.
Every part was meticulously post-processed, hand-assembled, and finished to the highest standards. Once complete, the model was installed on its custom base, enclosed within its protective glass case, and personally delivered and set up in the client’s home — ready to be admired for generations to come.
The completed SS Corinthic model was personally delivered to its owner and received with genuine warmth and appreciation for the dedication and skill invested by our model makers.
The long and meticulous manufacturing process proved more than worthwhile. The finished piece not only captures the form and character of the vessel with absolute accuracy, but also stands as a lasting tribute to the maritime legacy it represents.
