Semi-Traditional Narrowboat — Custom-Built Display Model Capturing Every Detail of a Cherished Canal Boat

Commissioned by Ruby Hobart, this project involved creating a highly detailed custom scale model of the narrow canal boat Yum Sing. The vessel held deep personal significance, having been a much-loved retreat and second home.
Ruby requested that the model capture the boat’s exterior with complete accuracy, incorporating functional opening doors at both bow and stern. A touch of interior detail — including the descending steps — was also included, bringing a sense of life and authenticity to the finished piece.
Following detailed discussions to define all the key features, we agreed to build the model in a waterline style with a realistic water surface effect to reflect the Yum Sing in its natural setting.
To ensure total accuracy, we conducted an on-site survey, carefully measuring the vessel and documenting every notable detail. Using this data, we developed a complete 3D CAD model — from the smallest door handle to the base and water effect — which formed the foundation of the manufacturing process.
The majority of the structure was produced using high-precision 3D printing, with select elements crafted from wood and metal to enhance realism and durability.
The exterior required a complex paint process, involving multiple colours to replicate the distinctive finish of the original vessel. Custom-made decals recreated the traditional decorative motifs, ensuring a faithful and authentic appearance.
The completed model was mounted on a bespoke base featuring a textured waterline effect and protected with a crystal-clear acrylic display cover, preserving its detail for years to come.
Upon completion, the Yum Sing model was carefully delivered to the client in perfect condition. Created as a meaningful gift, it now stands as a lasting reminder of cherished times spent aboard the boat, capturing its character, detail, and spirit in miniature form.
