Yacht Creole, World Skill & World Sincerity
A masterful restoration of three Niarchos vessel models.
Three models with a length between 1m and 2.3m
Type of the project: Restoration
Purpose: Display in offices
Client: Niarchos London Ltd
We were honoured to be commissioned to restore three historic ship models from the esteemed Niarchos London Ltd collection—an exclusive assignment that highlights both the legacy of one of the most influential maritime dynasties and our commitment to exceptional model craftsmanship.
Niarchos London Ltd is part of the legacy of the late Stavros Niarchos, a legendary Greek shipping magnate known for building one of the world’s largest merchant fleets in the 20th century. The company continues to preserve and honour maritime history through its carefully curated collection of vessel models.
The centrepiece of this restoration project is the iconic yacht Creole—a majestic 65-metre wooden sailing yacht built in 1927 by Camper & Nicholsons. Once owned by Stavros Niarchos himself, Creole is known for her sweeping lines, luxurious interiors, and distinguished history, serving as both a private yacht and a naval training vessel during World War II. Today, she remains one of the most beautiful classic yachts ever built, and restoring her model was both a privilege and a challenge we embraced with reverence.
Alongside Creole, we restored the model of World Skill, a bulk carrier designed for transporting large quantities of dry cargo such as coal, grain, or iron ore. These vessels are the backbone of global trade, and World Skill is a symbol of the Niarchos fleet’s strength and reach in the dry cargo shipping industry.
The third model, World Sincerity, represents a classic oil tanker—a vital part of the Niarchos fleet, which once included some of the largest tankers in the world. World Sincerity symbolises the industrial power and logistical sophistication that defined the golden era of tanker shipping.
The restoration began with the careful collection and transport of the three historic vessel models from the Niarchos London Ltd office to our specialist workshop at Polaris Models in Potters Bar. Due to their age and delicate condition, we exercised extreme caution throughout the process. The World Sincerity model, in particular, posed a challenge due to its large size (approximately 2.3 metres long) and heavy glass cabinet and base, requiring careful handling and secure logistics.
Once safely delivered to Polaris Models, we began by disassembling the display cases. Both the yacht Creole and the World Skill bulk carrier needed entirely new bases and glass covers, while the World Sincerity’s case underwent full refurbishment to restore its original appearance.
The yacht Creole arrived with a layer of dirt and several structural issues. The rigging required adjustment, the gunwale was damaged at the bowsprit and stern, and the deckhouse had detached, along with several loose deck details. We addressed all of these issues with precision, followed by a deep clean of the model’s entire surface, restoring its elegance and historical accuracy.
The World Skill model also needed deep cleaning, but more importantly, it had severe cracks in the hull’s black and white paint above the waterline. These required extensive filling, repainting, and refinishing to achieve a seamless look. Additional damage to the superstructure and forecastle deck was carefully restored. The model was then fitted to a new custom base and enclosed in a brand-new glass case.
The World Sincerity tanker was the most complex of the three. Deep, structural cracks had formed around the hull, particularly where the superstructure connects to the hull. These were repaired and the surface was resprayed to match the original finish. The most critical issue was a large, raised bulge on the deck caused by warping and ungluing of the top material. This area included many delicate fittings, making it nearly impossible to remove them without risking damage.
Instead, we opted for a more precise solution: injecting adhesive underneath the warped deck through small, carefully placed holes, and using custom-built jigs to apply pressure while the glue cured. This method preserved the deck details and successfully corrected the warping. Additional minor repairs on the superstructure and surrounding areas were completed to finish the model.
Once the restoration was complete, we repacked all three models with great care and delivered them back to Niarchos London Ltd, where we reinstalled them in their original display settings—fully restored, protected, and ready to continue telling their maritime story for many years to come.
The restoration of the Niarchos London Ltd vessel models was a highly intricate and rewarding project. These were museum-quality scale models, crafted decades ago with extraordinary detail and craftsmanship. Their age and value demanded a delicate, expert approach—one that our skilled team at Polaris Models handled with precision and respect.
Thanks to our experience in high-end model restoration, we were able to bring all three models—yacht Creole, World Skill, and World Sincerity—back to their original splendour. Every repair, repaint, and cleaning process was executed to the highest standard, leaving no visible trace of the extensive damage they once had. The final results speak for themselves: each model now looks as if it had never been touched by time or wear.
During the final installation at the Niarchos London office, we observed something that truly validates our work—the calm and confidence of our clients as we handled these irreplaceable models. Their trust in Polaris Models, from the initial collection to the final placement, was evident throughout the process. And once the models were back in place, the satisfaction on their faces was the greatest reward we could ask for.
We always feel honoured when our clients react with such visible joy and pride—it is a reminder of why we are passionate about what we do. Seeing these priceless pieces of maritime history fully restored and appreciated once again is what drives our commitment to excellence in scale model restoration.
