One of the first questions we are asked when discussing a new commission is, “What scale should my yacht model be?” While it may appear to be a simple decision, selecting the right scale is one of the most important stages of creating a bespoke yacht model.

Whether you are commissioning a motor yacht model, sailing yacht model, luxury yacht model, superyacht model, megayacht model or expedition yacht model, there is no universal scale that suits every project. The right choice depends on the purpose of the model and where it will be displayed.

The characteristics of the original yacht and the level of detail you wish to achieve are equally important when selecting the most appropriate scale.

Choosing the correct scale is not simply about deciding how large the finished model should be. It influences the overall presentation, the engineering possibilities, the level of detail that can be achieved and ultimately how faithfully the original yacht can be recreated.

Every Commission Is Different

One of the biggest misconceptions is that every yacht has a “correct” scale. In reality, the same yacht could be reproduced in several different scales, with each being the right choice depending on the client’s requirements.

At Polaris Models, one of the first questions we ask is whether the client already has a preferred scale or an overall model size in mind. Some clients know exactly what they would like, while others are looking for guidance. This conversation provides the starting point for understanding the project before we explore where the model will be displayed, the level of detail required and any special features the client would like to include.

The purpose of the model often has a greater influence on scale than the yacht itself. A model created for display in a private residence will often have different priorities from one commissioned for a yacht builder, brokerage, corporate office or exhibition. The available display space, viewing distance, surrounding interior, transport requirements and even whether the model will become part of an existing collection all influence the recommendation.

Private collectors may prefer an impressive centrepiece that immediately attracts attention or a more discreet display that complements the surrounding interior. Models commissioned for corporate offices, exhibitions or marketing environments often place greater emphasis on brand presentation, visibility and practical transport between locations. Rather than following strict rules, the chosen scale should always reflect the purpose of the commission and the client’s vision.

The Yacht Itself Influences the Scale

Every yacht presents different design and engineering challenges.

A sleek motor yacht, a traditional sailing yacht, a modern expedition yacht, an elegant superyacht and a large megayacht all have unique proportions, exterior layouts and technical features. While each can be reproduced in a variety of scales, certain scales naturally represent their character more successfully than others.

As an unwritten rule, the larger and more complex the original yacht becomes, the larger the model often is. This is not simply for visual impact. A larger scale provides more space to faithfully reproduce the flowing lines, deck arrangements and distinctive features that define the vessel.

The objective is never to build the largest possible model, but to choose the scale that best captures the yacht while remaining appropriate for its intended display.

Scale Determines What Is Possible

Perhaps the most important factor when choosing a scale is something many people do not initially consider.

A larger scale does not simply create a larger model. It also creates opportunities to achieve a significantly higher level of detail and incorporate features that may not be practical at smaller scales.

As more physical space becomes available, finer details can be reproduced with greater precision while maintaining correct proportions and structural integrity. Depending on the commission, a larger scale may allow us to include opening sections that reveal selected areas of the yacht, detailed interior spaces, ambient lighting, illuminated navigation lights, removable decks, moving components and other bespoke engineering features.

This is particularly important for larger superyachts and megayachts, where many defining characteristics are found within the complexity of the exterior decks and interior arrangement. Choosing an appropriate scale allows these features to be represented accurately while maintaining the elegance and balance of the finished model.

That does not mean larger is always better. Many smaller-scale models achieve remarkable levels of craftsmanship. The purpose of selecting the right scale is simply to ensure there is sufficient space to reproduce the features that matter most to the client and create the best possible representation of the original yacht.

Engineering and Experience

Professional yacht model making is far more complex than simply reducing the dimensions of the original vessel.

Materials, manufacturing methods and engineering tolerances do not reduce proportionally. Railings, glazing, masts, fittings and countless other components must all be carefully engineered to remain both realistic and structurally sound.

For this reason, we generally recommend working to a recognised standard scale wherever possible. Occasionally, clients ask for a model of a specific overall length rather than a particular scale. While we can manufacture a model to virtually any dimensions, our first step is usually to identify the nearest recognised standard scale that achieves the desired size.

Working to a recognised scale provides a consistent engineering foundation throughout the project. Every measurement of the original yacht is converted accurately into the CAD model using one precise mathematical relationship, ensuring the design, manufacturing and assembly processes remain consistent from start to finish.

Rather than continually recalculating thousands of individual dimensions using an arbitrary ratio, every component remains correctly proportioned to the rest of the model.

If the preferred overall size falls between two recognised scales, we discuss the available options with the client and recommend the solution that provides the best balance between engineering accuracy, visual presentation and the practical requirements of the commission.

Recommending a scale is therefore as much an engineering decision as an artistic one, ensuring every commissioned yacht model achieves the highest possible level of accuracy and craftsmanship.

Our Recommendation

At Polaris Models, selecting the right scale is never simply about choosing a number.

Every commission begins by understanding how the model will be used, where it will be displayed and what the client wants to achieve. We consider the yacht itself, the intended presentation, the desired level of detail and whether additional features such as interior spaces, lighting or moving elements are part of the vision.

Only then do we recommend the scale that we believe will produce the most authentic, practical and visually impressive result.

Our role is not simply to build a model at the requested scale. It is to use our experience in yacht design, engineering and professional model making to recommend the scale that best represents the original vessel, allowing every commissioned yacht model to become a centrepiece that can be admired for many years.
