One of the first questions we are asked is, “How much does a custom scale model cost?” Because every commission is designed from the ground up, there is no standard answer. Whether it is a luxury yacht model, commercial ship model, offshore platform, historic vessel or bespoke boat model, each project has its own unique requirements.
Every quotation is prepared individually, reflecting the research, engineering, craftsmanship and materials required for that specific commission. Understanding these factors helps explain how the cost is formed and why every custom scale model is as unique as the vessel or structure it represents.

Reference Materials & CAD Development
The single biggest factor influencing a custom scale model is often the information available about the original vessel.
Some projects arrive with complete builder’s drawings, General Arrangement plans, CAD files and extensive photography. Others, particularly private yachts or older vessels, may have only a handful of photographs and limited documentation. Before manufacturing can begin, every missing detail must first be researched, interpreted and recreated.
At Polaris Models, every commission starts with the development of a detailed 3D CAD model. This digital foundation ensures accuracy, allows every component to fit correctly and forms the basis for every stage of production. The more information available at the beginning, the more efficiently the design process can progress.
Type of Model
Every type of vessel presents different challenges. A sleek superyacht model requires a completely different approach to a commercial ship model, while offshore models such as oil rigs, FPSOs and jack-up rigs demand extensive structural detailing and engineering.
Historic ship models, sailing yachts and modern boat models each require different construction techniques, materials and levels of craftsmanship. Rather than one type being more expensive than another, every project is assessed according to its individual complexity and the work required to reproduce it accurately.

Scale & Complexity
Many people assume that larger models always cost significantly more. While scale certainly influences materials, manufacturing and presentation, complexity often has a greater impact.
A compact superyacht model filled with intricate deck equipment, lighting and fine details can require considerably more design and assembly than a much larger vessel with simpler geometry. The final quotation reflects the balance between size, scale and the level of detail required to faithfully represent the original.

Bespoke Features
Every commission is tailored to its intended purpose. Some clients request elegant exterior presentation, while others require opening sections, detailed interiors, ambient lighting, removable components or moving features.
These custom additions require additional design, engineering and testing before production begins, ensuring they integrate seamlessly into the finished model while maintaining both accuracy and reliability.
Manufacturing & Craftsmanship
Modern technologies such as 3D printing, CNC machining, laser cutting and photo-etching allow us to manufacture highly accurate components with exceptional consistency. However, these technologies do not replace craftsmanship.
Every custom scale model still requires extensive hand assembly, finishing, painting and detailing. Historic wooden ship models, in particular, often involve traditional techniques that remain largely handcrafted, reflecting the skills of experienced model makers developed over many years.

Presentation & Display
How and where a model will be displayed is another important consideration. A model designed for a private collection has different requirements to one displayed in a corporate headquarters, museum, exhibition or public space.
From bespoke hardwood plinths and acrylic display cases to integrated wall installations or modular offshore models assembled on site, every presentation solution is designed to complement both the model and its environment while providing long-term protection.

Every Quotation Is Unique
No two bespoke commissions are ever the same. The available reference material, the type of vessel, scale, complexity, level of detail, manufacturing methods and display requirements all contribute to the final scope of the project.
For this reason, every quotation prepared by Polaris Models is tailored specifically to the individual commission. Our aim is not simply to build a scale model, but to create an accurate and enduring representation that reflects the character, engineering and craftsmanship of the original vessel.
